Great RDA Presentation!

Lynne Legrow is a cataloguer at the Halifax Public Library and she delivered a wonderful presentation last week to a group of Library Information Technology students at the Nova Scotia Community College. RDA is On the Way provides a very nice overview of RDA (Resource Description and Access) the new cataloguing rules that will update and replace the AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules).

She talked about the online nature of our bibliographic world and how this environment provides an international scope for researchers, students and library users. To meet the changing expectations of information searchers the next generation catalogue will need to operate more as a ‘finding aid’ rather than an inventory listing the physical resources found in particular libraries.

Lynne provides a nice overview of the changes and differences between AACR and RDA touching on FRBR and MARC. She talks about the necessary conceptual shift to an attribute based description that will play better in a world attempting to work with linked data.

Included is one of my favorite quotes on the nature of cataloguing and cataloguers:

Jesse Shera’s Two Laws of Cataloguing
Law #1 No cataloguer will accept the work of any other cataloguer.
Law #2 No cataloguer will accept his/her own work six months after the cataloguing.

Lot’s of great stuff in this presentation and well worth reviewing.
